What counts as a dental emergency?
You should seek emergency care if you’re experiencing:
- Severe, persistent toothache or pain
- Swelling in your gums, face, or jaw
- A tooth that’s cracked, broken, or knocked out
- Lost filling, crown, or bridge that hurts or leaves exposed nerves
- Bleeding gums or soft tissue injury
- Signs of infection: bad taste, fever, or swelling
These are among the most commonly recognized emergency signs.
What should I do before getting to your office?
Here are interim steps you can take to protect your teeth and reduce discomfort:
- Rinse your mouth gently with warm salt water
- For bleeding: apply gentle pressure with clean gauze
- For swelling: use a cold compress on the outside of cheek
- Save any broken pieces of tooth or crown, rinse them, and bring them with you
- Avoid chewing on the damaged side
- Take over-the-counter pain relief (ibuprofen, etc.), but don’t apply painkillers directly onto gums or tooth
These first-aid steps are standard guidance in dental emergencies.
If I knocked out a tooth, is it still possible to save it?
Yes — if handled quickly.
- Pick up the tooth by the crown (don’t touch the roots).
- Rinse it gently — don’t scrub or damage any tissue.
- Try to reinsert into the socket if possible (without forcing it).
- If reinsertion isn’t possible, place the tooth in milk or saliva (or a tooth preservation kit) and get to the dentist immediately.
The chances of saving the tooth drop dramatically after ~30–60 minutes.
Will the emergency treatment hurt more than I’m already in pain?
No — our priority is pain relief and patient comfort. We use local anesthesia, nitrous oxide sedation if needed, and gentle techniques to minimize discomfort.

Should I ever go to the hospital instead of the dentist?
In most cases, dental emergencies are best handled in a dental office. But if you have:
- Uncontrolled bleeding
- Severe facial trauma or broken facial bones
- Signs of airway compromise or extreme swelling
…then going directly to a hospital or calling 911 may be appropriate.
